In 2014, The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) had scheduled its national meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, a state notorious for its cruel and inhumane treatment of immigrants, made manifest in the signing of S.B. 1070, one of the most anti-immigrant laws in the US. In response, Latina/os across the U.S. organized a national boycott of Arizona (still in place as of today). As well, in the early part of 2012, the Tucson Unified School District suspended its nationally acclaimed Ethnic Studies/Mexican American Studies program, with this, the district removed central texts of Mexican American Studies from the classrooms of a district characterized by a 60% Mexican American student population. In response, as Focus Group Representative for ATHE's Latina/o Focus Group and along with the support of ATHE, I organized and created a performance altar where ATHE members were invited to participate in a “banned book" reading event staged in the conferenece's exhibit hall. The short videos and images below feature ATHE members reading aloud excerpts from Tucson’s “illegal” books.
