//ANTIGONE
BY SOPHOKLES A NEW VERSION BY ANNE CARSON

Antigone is in deep grief. Antigone’s father, King Oidipous, has left his kingdom of Thebes in self-exile, and her mother, Queen Jocasta, has passed. Antigone’s brothers attempted to share governance of Thebes. They could not agree on how to do so. The city erupted in a brutal civil war that pitted brother against brother. Both brothers died.

The new king, Kreon (Antigone’s uncle), is desperate to gain control over the city with a shocking display of power: Kreon refuses to bury the body of Antigone's rebellious brother, Polyneikes, but allows burial of her other brother, Eteokles. He insists: the city must have law and order — even if doing so violates the gods. Outraged, Antigone defies her uncle-king's laws and secretly buries her brother. Kreon takes action against her, risking the wrath of the gods.

A 2,500 year old play with important lessons for today about fate & free will, leadership, gender, morality, citizenship, and conscience versus law.
